Spotlighting is used to highlight specific values
based on certain conditions to identify exceptions and variations at a quick
glance.
Example 1:
The below sales Cross-tab shows product category wise gross sales for various states. To add spotlighters as per the below conditions, follow the steps.
Conditions:
- If the Gross sales is >= 10,000,000 – Highlight in Green color.
- If the Gross sales is >= 4,000,000 and Gross sales is < 10,000,000 – Hightlight in Yellow color.
- If the Gross sales is < 4,000,000 – Highlight in Red color.
SALES CROSS-TAB
Step 1
In the Cross-tab, right-click on any Gross sales value cell. The system displays the menu.
Step 2
In the menu, select Spotlighter.
The system displays the Add Spotlighters dialog box.

Step 3
In the Name field, enter any name as 'Sales_High'. In the Target drop-down list, select the value as 'GrossSales'. In the Apply on section, select the Data, Row Summary, and Column Summary checkboxes. In the Add Condition section, select Gross Sales from the Column drop-down list. In the Operator drop-down list, select '>=' operator. In the next drop-down list, enter the value as '10000000' and click ADD.
Note: You can also include multiple conditions by clicking Add. The system displays the column name, selected operator, and value. You can also delete the added condition by clicking Delete icon.
In the Formatting section, enter the text as 'Good' in the Alternate text field. In the Style field, select style the Bold style. In the Colour field, select the Green colour. In the Background colour field, set it as 'Transparent' by selecting the checkbox (The Preview section displays the alternate text as it would appear on screen). Select the Display alternate text as a tooltip checkbox to display the alternate text ('Good') as tooltip and click OK.
Step 4
Follow the procedure of Add Spotlighters for adding other conditions (Yellow and Red).
The sales Cross-tab cross-tab will be displayed with highlighters based on the gross sales value as below.
User can display static or dynamic text as alternate text for the spotlighted cells. Dynamic text will allow users to display alternate text using expressions. These expressions can be based on the columns used in the spotlighter configuration. The dynamic text can be given by surrounding the column names with '$' symbol. e.g. $GrossSales$.
Example 2:
In the Category wise – state wise – gross sales cross-tab, to display the actual sales value with the color indicators (■, ■, ■), follow the below steps.
Step 1
Follow the procedure of Add Spotlighters for adding spotlighter conditions.
Step 2
In the Formatting section, enter the text as '$GrossSales$ ■' in the Alternate text field. Do not select the Display alternate text as a tooltip checkbox and click OK.
Step 3
Follow the same procedure for adding other texts – '$GrossSales$ ■' and '$GrossSales$ ■' – for other conditions.
The sales cross-tab will be displayed with dynamic alternate texts as below.
SALES CROSS-TAB WITH DYNAMIC TEXT IN THE SPOTLIGHTERS
Example 3:
To display apply spotlighters in the gross sales percentage contribution in the Category wise – state wise – gross sales cross-tab, follow the below steps.
Step 1
In the cross-tab duplicate the Gross sales measure column (GrossSales_1) to have the percentage contribution along with Gross Sales value.
Step 2
Apply 'Row Group Percentage' data operation in the duplicated column (GrossSales_1).
Step 3
Format the column label font color (match with the background color) so as to display it empty.
Step 4
Follow the procedure of Add Spotlighters for adding spotlighter conditions.
Step 5
Keep the Target column as 'GrossSales_1'. In the Formatting section, enter the text as '$GrossSales_1$' in the Alternate text field. Do not select the Display alternate text as a tooltip checkbox and click OK.
Step 6
Follow the same procedure for adding other conditions.
The sales cross-tab will be displayed as below with spotlighters on the percentage contribution column.
The spotlighters can also be accessed from the Manage spotlighters option available in the cross-tab settings toolbar (as displayed below). You can any time Add new spotlighters, Edit and Delete them, Make the spotlighters Private / Public and Active / Inactive from the spotlighters template dialog box.
